I started developing my interest in architecture, structural design, and exterior and interior design a couple of years back, more specifically on the topic of modular, minimalist, and tiny houses which I love to watch about on the various channels I follow on YouTube.

Taking a peek at the architectural design process, I was able to learn about some key insights that I have since applied to my work as a multimedia and UI/UX designer. I have found that applying principles of architecture can greatly enhance the design of digital products and interfaces. While the medium may be different, there are many similarities between the principles of architecture and the design of digital spaces.

One principle of architecture that I often apply in my work is the idea of creating a clear hierarchy. In architecture, this means creating a clear sense of order and organization within a physical space. In digital design, this can be achieved through careful use of typography, color, and layout. By establishing a clear hierarchy, users can quickly and easily understand the information on a page, making it easier for them to navigate and find what they are looking for.

Another principle of architecture that I like to utilize is the effective use of space. In architecture, this means maximizing the potential of a physical space to create an efficient and functional design. In digital design, this can be achieved through careful use of white space and a minimalist approach to design. By using space effectively, users can focus on the most important elements of a design, making it easier for them to understand and use the product.

A third principle of architecture I often use is the keenness in creating a sense of movement and flow. In architecture, this means designing spaces that guide the user through a physical space in a natural and intuitive way. In digital design, this can be achieved through the use of visual cues such as arrows, animation, and transitions. By creating a sense of movement and flow, users can more easily navigate through a digital space and find the information they are looking for.

A fourth principle of architecture that I apply in my work is the idea of creating a sense of balance and harmony. Not only is this important in visual design, it is also one of the fundamental lessons of Gestalt psychology. In architecture, this means designing spaces that are visually pleasing and harmonious. In digital design, this can be achieved through careful use of color, typography, and layout. By creating a sense of balance and harmony, users are more likely to enjoy using a product and feel more positively about the brand behind it.

Visual design and architecture share many similarities in their underlying principles and concepts. Both disciplines focus on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that are designed for human use and experience. Both put focus on form and function, and I believe there are a lot of insights architects and visual designers can share with each other.
